Specialising in court, society and ballet portraiture, Baron once called himself the ‘poor man’s Cecil Beaton’ but was far from that.
He became the official photographer to Sadler’s Wells Company at Covent Garden, the Ballet Theatre from America and the de Basil Company whilst also photographing every major figure in ballet who visited the UK. Frequently requested to take both official and family portraits for the Royal family Baron also photographed the great actors of the day, including Laurence Olivier, Marlene Dietrich and Vivien Leigh.
During tours of America, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Cyd Charisse and Mae West were amongst those who sat for him.
In 1967 the Hulton Picture Collection purchased the Baron and Q collections of over 70,000 negatives and 5,000 colour transparencies taken between 1935 and 1956 (with the exception of his Royal portraits and certain private commissions). The core of the collection is ballet orientated but includes a dazzling array of theatrical, film and society portraits together with travel material, especially in Thailand.
