John Chillingworth

The Getty Images - Hulton Archive holds four hundred of his picture stories, from the UK and around the world. The legendary picture magazine editor, Tom Hopkinson, described John as one of his great successes and was convinced that his natural talent would take him to the pinnacle of his profession. The son of a newspaper communication pioneer, he joined Hulton Press, publishers of Picture Post as a youngster during WW II. Chillingworth was, to say the least, surprised by and grateful for the opportunities that came his way.

As a professional photographer, he perfected his style by personal contact with the original ‘masters’ of photographic journalism, in particular his mentor, the late Kurt Hutton. Encouraged by Tom Hopkinson, he learned to combine ‘story-telling’ images with the written word and worked with some of the finest magazine journalists of the age.

From the age of twenty-two, he began to travelled the world; the youngest of the ‘star’ team of post-war staff photographers, working for Picture Post. Seven years later, with inside knowledge of the impending doom of the most popular British picture magazine of its era, he resigned to freelance. Exhibited widely and treasured by collectors, his images are as fresh today as they were in the ‘golden age of photographic journalism.
